The urban development–happy planet link
I am actually on vacation right now (in New Mexico, no less), but thought I’d post something here to keep the blog alive.
I haven’t written much yet on what I feel is a growing trend among those choosing alternatives to driving alone. And it can be summed up like this: It’s the planet, stupid.
That’s right, more and more people are waking up to the reality of global warming and are seeing how our car happy lifestyles contribute to a sadder and sadder planet.
For a fuller analysis of this issue, I turn you to the Commuter PageBlog, which highlights a major research project just conducted:
Some of the findings from the report . . .
“Curbing emission from cars depends on improved vehicle efficiency, cleaner fuels, and a reduction in driving according to the report. It goes on to say that one of the best ways to reduce vehicle miles traveled is to build places where people can accomplish more with less driving. The report documents that persons who live in compact urban neighborhoods, where cars are not the only transportation option, drive a third fewer miles than those in the auto-oriented suburbs.”
