Old Car Way, New Zipcar Way

Filed under: Your commute options,Zipcar, driving, parking, save money — Nancy Shore @ 9:49 am

The beginning of a New Year is a great time to say goodbye to old ways of doing things and hello to new ideas and approaches.  For many people, owning one or even two cars just doesn’t make sense anymore, especially living in such a pedestrian-friendly place as Ann Arbor.

So why not look at the advantages of a new concept—carsharing?  Carsharing allows you to have a car when you need one without having to pay the expense when you don’t.  The most popular carsharing business in the country is Zipcar.  Currently,  Zipcar has more than 20 cars in Ann Arbor, with 6 in downtown Ann Arbor and the rest on the University of Michigan campus.  In addition, Zipcar has cars in cities all over the country.

What do people use Zipcars for?  Zipcar members use cars for going shopping, attending meetings, popping over to events in other towns and much more.  One couple even used a Zipcar to drive to their honeymoon after getting married!

To use a Zipcar, you just become a member at zipcar.com/annarbor (if you are affiliated with the UM, go to zipcar.com/umich).  When you become a member, you’ll get a special credit-card sized zipcard in the mail.  Then, all you have to do is go on the Zipcar website, reserve a car when you want to use it, go to the car and tap your zipcard on the windshield.

When the doors open, hop inside, grab the keys (they are already in the car) and go about your business.  Need gas?  Every Zipcar has a gascard inside that you can use at any gas station to fill up the tank.  Hourly rates for Zipcars are as low as $8 an hour, and that includes the gas and 180 free miles!

Here are just a few reasons to become a member of Zipcar Ann Arbor

Old Car Way New Zipcar Way
Paying for a car (including gas, insurance etc) that spends most of the day sitting in your driveway or garage Becoming a Zipcar member for around $50/yr and having access to 20+ cars for as little as $8/hr
Driving downtown and paying for parking because you think you might need your car during the day. Walking, biking or busing downtown because you know you’ll have a Zipcar available if you need a car.  Did I mention that parking for Zipcar is free?
Having to clean and maintain your own car. Having someone else clean and maintain the Zipcars.
Worrying that your car is getting a little old and that it might break down. Enjoying a variety of new cars, from a Mini Cooper to a Ford Escape, that are part of the Zipcar fleet.
Feeling guilty about your car’s impact on the environment. Feeling great because you are sharing a car with others and thus reducing your carbon footprint.

If you’re ready to try something new, visit zipcar.com/annarbor and sign up to be a Zipcar member today!

Attention Current Zipcar Members:

Help us think up more Old Way/New Way concepts.  We’ll be tweeting Old Way/New Way ideas (and putting them on our getDowntown Facebook page) throughout the month of January.   Share your ideas by tweeting, commenting on our page and posting to our blog.

Commuter Challenge Report: Week 3

Filed under: Commuter Challenge,Your commute options,Zipcar,carpool/vanpool,events — Nancy Shore @ 3:12 pm

Week 3 of the Commuter Challenge is over and it was another great week!

The Numbers

So far, 142 Organizations and 1,930 participants have signed up for the Challenge.  This is by far the most we’ve ever had!  Of those participants, 1,557 have logged at least 1 sustainable commute.  Collectively, we’ve logged 168,728 miles and avoided 144,413 lbs of CO2!

The Winners

Here’s who’s winning the Challenge so far.  View updated stats here.

1 Person Orgs: Keystone Media and Gardener Communications are tied for first.  Garrett Scott is nipping at their heels and UM—Lee Lab is a close 4th.

2-9 Person Orgs: There’s been a bit of a shake up in this category with Mike Green and Associates pulling ahead of Ghostly International and Friends. The Greenway Collaborative and Center for Simplified Strategic Planning are tied for 3rd.

10-24 Person Orgs: This category has a lot of movement in the ranking.  Currently, Abor the Treeline is in the lead with UM-Volling Lab and ApplEcon close behind.

25-99 Person Orgs: Quinn Evans Architects is currently on top, but Menlo might find a way to edge them out.  The UM Center for the Child and the Family (which has won every year of the Challenge) is still trying to catch up and is now in 3rd place.

100-499 Person Orgs: While JSTOR has been the dominant force in this category, they are now others in contention!  Last year’s winners UM CoE-AOSS are now in first, newcomers Zingermans Delicatessan are in second, and JSTOR is now in 3rd.

So what will these Orgs win if they win the Challenge?  Click here to find out.

Prizes, We Got Your Prizes!

We’ve been giving out 4 prizes every day during the Commuter Challenge.  These week, we gave out prizes to people who logged a bus commute.  Next week, we’ll be giving out prizes to those who log a bike commute.  Check out who’s winning our prizes here.

We also have our Ambassadors out there as part of the Commuter Challenge Prize Patrol.  Maybe they’ll give you a prize.

Know someone who’s been a Super Commuter during the Commuter Challenge?  Why not nominate them for a Super Commuter Prize?

Awards

We’re giving out a bunch of great awards for the Commuter Challenge.  Check out all of the awards here.

You can also VOTE for who you think should win some of the Commuter Challenge Awards.

Guide to Sharing a Ride and Zipcar in Ann Arbor

Whether you are looking for a carpool partner or want to learn more about Zipcar here’s an overview of your ridesharing and carsharing options.  This Guide is saved as a page on the getDowntown blog and will be updated from that page.  Click here to view the most recent version of this Guide.

What is . . .

  • A Carpool? Carpools are groups of two or more people who commute together using a vehicle provided by a person within the group.  A carpool can consist of co-workers, neighbors, friends, spouses, family members, roommates, or someone you just met through a rideshare site. Carpooling doesn’t require a commitment of five days a week. It can be once a week, every other week, or whatever works with your schedule.  There are a number of different ways you can set up a carpool, from having someone pay for gas while the other drives, to meeting at a set location and driving one car to work.  More on carpooling can be found by clicking here.

  • A Vanpool? Vanpools are groups of five to fifteen people who commute together using a vehicle provided by the Michigan Department of Transportation (through MichiVan). The costs of commuting can be significantly reduced in vanpools due to the number of people sharing the rides.  For more on how vanpools are organized, click here.

  • A Zipcar? Zipcars are “wheels when you want them”, literally.  Choose from a variety of self-service cars you can use by the hour or day. With Zipcars parked in downtown Ann Arbor (and on University of Michigan’s campus) all you’ll have to do is decide where you want to go and when. Click here for more details!
